We are Playdead, an independent game company based in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. We have made two critically acclaimed titles, LIMBO and INSIDE. Our current project is a 3rd-person science fiction adventure rendered in a realistic but markedly stylised manner.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate texture and material artist with both outstanding digital painting skills and a strong technical foundation. You will be responsible for hand-painting key textures as well as designing materials for the game, stylised in accordance with the art direction. You will build and set up high quality materials in Unreal Engine and collaborate with the art team and other departments to prototype materials and ensure continuity with visual style. Your technical know-how will enable you to give consideration to game performance and overcoming technical constraints in the pipeline. What will you be doing?

  • Hand-paint high quality textures for a variety of organic and structural surfaces
  • Author and enhance Materials in Unreal Engine for the production team to use
  • Unwrap and texture 3D assets
  • Establish material workflows and pipelines that will be used by the art team to always ensure high-fidelity and continuity with the visual quality of the textures and materials
  • Evaluate material and texture performance and provide creative or technical solutions to optimise and meet the project performance requirements
  • Collaborate with artists, designers and programmers to find creative and technical solutions to resolve difficulties on the projec

Required Skills & Experience

  • Professional experience within 3D game production, working with materials & textures using any major game engine
  • Exceptional digital painting skills and a highly developed artistic sensibility
  • Experience with texture creation tools such as Substance Designer/Painter, ZBrush, 3D Modelling Tools & Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Great communication skills and ability to work effectively on shared project
